(RSF/IFEX) – RSF is concerned that Cheikh Bekaye, a correspondent in
Nouakchott with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) since 1986 and
with the Arab-language daily “El Hayat”, published in London since 1989,
has had his accreditation revoked. According to RSF’s information, on 15
April 1999, the editorial offices of the BBC and of “El Hayat” received a
letter from the ministry of communications notifying them of the revoking of
the journalist’s accreditation, but without providing a reason for this
action.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the president:
asking him to intervene with the ministry of communications so that the
journalist can once again carry out his work independently
asking him to use his influence to to guarantee press freedom in
Mauritania
